When we first got married, we received a fondue pot as a wedding gift. However, it remained in the box for about three years until I finally decided to pull it out. The fondue pot is a wonderful appliance and I cannot believe I had been ignoring it for all those years!
If you have a fondue pot you have been ignoring, here are a couple of delicious recipes to get you started:
Hot Cheese Fondue
For this recipe, you will need flour, chili powder, shredded Monterey Jack cheese, shredded sharp cheddar cheese, one can of beer (non-alcoholic will work fine), minced garlic, and one can of green chilies.
A medium bowl, mix 1/4 cup of flour, 2 teaspoons of chili powder, 1 pound of shredded Monterey Jack cheese, and 1/2 pound of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. Pour the one can of beer into your fondue pot then add the cheese mixture. On top of the cheese, add 1 minced clove of garlic and the can of green chilies, but do not stir. Let the cheese start to melt before you stir everything together. This is excellent served with bread or chips.
KaasDoop
KaasDoop is a South Holland cheese dip that is wonderful when made in a fondue pot. For this recipe, you will need grated gouda cheese, milk, cornstarch, brandy, pepper, and nutmeg.
In a saucepan, bring 1 1/2 cups of milk to a boil. Add 10 1/2 ounces of grated gouda cheese just a little at a time so it has time to melt as you stir. In a small bowl, combine 2 tablespoons of brandy and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until it makes a paste, then add that to the cheese mixture and stir well. Season with a dash of pepper and nutmeg then transfer it to the fondue pot. This is best served with cubed dark brown or rye bread.
