I love kitchen gadgets. Not as much as I love cookbooks, but still I have my fair share of cooking gadgets. In fact my friends know that if they need something a little odd like a spice grater or lemon zester. . .I’m the one to call. I even have a garlic press, all manner of cake and bundt pans, and an old fashioned egg beater. (Which I swear is the safest way to let kids help you cook and mix in the kitchen.) I have two crock pots and several different sizes of muffin pans. (Are you getting the picture here?) But there are a couple of things I recently found that even my kitchen gadget minded brain would pass up on:
America’s Only Taco Cooking System–The Taco Rack
La-cooka-rack-a Ltd. has at last produced what we’ve all been waiting for–a taco cooking system. You would think that this might be a mutli-tasking center on which you can both cook your meat while chopping your vegetables for tacos. Or perhaps it would be a center that holds everthing. Not exactly. It’s a taco shell rack that helps to ensure that the shells warm evenly so you have warm taco shells that don’t collapse. Supposedly it prevents shell breakage as well but I have my doubts. It also claims to spare you mess while eating your taco but unless it can teach my children how to eat a taco without the filling coming out the other end–we will still have a messy taco night.
The Lattice Pie Roller
Okay so at first look this doesn’t sound utterly useless right? It’s a rolling pin that essentially cuts out a design from the pie dough so that you get a beautifully topped lattice pie every time. But have you rolled out your own pie dough from scratch ever? I cannot imagine picking up a whole piece of dough, made for a 9” pie, with holes in it and having it resemble a beautiful lattice pie top once it made it to the top of the pie. And I bake a lot of pies–I’m pretty practiced at getting that crust on top in one piece. I have before taken a small cookie cutter and cut out cute shapes from the top crust of a pie and then transferred it to the top of a pie but the reality is that if you fill your pie full of holes–it gets harder and harder to transfer. Rather, I think you’re better off doing it the old fashioned way.
