Two Words You Don’t Want to Hear: Spring Cleaning!

It’s Spring! Yes, that means Easter and flowers and warm afternoons, but it also means time to rub and scrub, shine and design, and dust, fuss, and straighten. Time to get rid of clutter and cobwebs and to make your home sparkle and smell as fresh as the great outdoors.

So, are you ready? I have to admit, I’m not. I can handle opening windows and airing out the months of cooped-up-ness but I hate the actual cleaning part. I don’t like having dirt under my nails. I don’t like dusting ceilings or washing walls or moving furniture to scrub floors and clean carpets. What I like least is anyone who is so perky that she shows up at my door all smiles talking about spring cleaning as if it’s the next major holiday!

Now that I have my rant out of the way, I guess we should get down to business. Spring cleaning is quite a job, so we better get started. Sometimes figuring out where to start is the biggest challenge, so maybe these tips will help:

Start Wherever You Wish

It doesn’t really matter in which space you begin spring cleaning. The important part is that once you choose a space, you start in one corner and work your way around the room. This is much quicker and more effective than stopping and starting or going from room to room. Start in one area, work around until the entire room is done, working from top to bottom, and then move on to another space.

Save Floors for Last

Okay, there’s one clarification on finishing each space before moving on and that’s leave the floor until later. Do everything else in each space and tackle floors last. When you’re ready to start the floors, begin at one end of the house and vacuum your little heart out until you reach the other end. Hardwood, tile floors, carpet, or any other type of flooring can use a good vacuuming. Then, go back and wash hard floors as needed.
