Tye Dye Cake

We made a Tie Dye Cake the other day. The little ones were thrilled to make it and all were thrilled to eat it. It’s a fun way to get the kids involved in the kitchen and for simple color lessons. I simply used a white cake mix and common food coloring to make this a fast and fun project the girls could help out with from beginning to end.

Ingredients

White Cake Mix

Food coloring using any colors you prefer

Directions

1. Make cake according to package directions.

2. Divide batter into small bowls. You will need as many bowls as the number of food coloring you will be using.

3. Add a few drops of food coloring to each bowl. Remember you can always add more but you cannot take away so go slow.

4. Mix thoroughly until you arrive at your desired color.

Take caution when allowing a child to add in food coloring. You may get a very strong color of batter or little fingers.

TIP: If little hands, faces, or toes (lol) become stained with food coloring remove with baking soda or toothpaste. Simply rinse the area with warm water scrub with toothpaste or baking soda and rinse. You may have to repeat.

5. Add your batter in clumps of color to your pan. Do not mix. Just add them sporadically until all the batter is used.

6. Lightly mix and smooth the colors to evenly fill your pan. Be careful not to mix too much as to lose the effect.

My littlest one decided to lick her little hands at this point. A wonderful time to reinforce proper kitchen cleanliness. For a 2 year old, I simply tell her that her little fingers are not for licking and if she continues she will not be allowed to continue helping.

7. Bake according to package directions. Once the cake is cooled you may frost or cut up to see your array of colors.

Remember to have fun! This is a fun project for the kids so let go and allow for little hands to mix, stir, and create!
