In previous blogs I discussed different types of pillow fill material and what pillows can help allergy sufferers get a good night’s sleep. This blog is dedicated to the different types of pillows that you wouldn’t necessarily use to get some serious zzz’s, but are wonderful additions to your home’s décor nonetheless.
Decorative Pillows. My mom is a nut for deco pillows, especially in the bedroom. (My poor dad spends about 10 minutes each night removing deco pillows from his side of the bed. She has so many deco pillows it’s hard to tell there’s a mattress underneath. My 2-year-old calls grandma’s bed “Pillow Mountain.”) In most homes deco pillows are meant to add more color and style to the bedroom. They are also an effective way of softening the look of wood or iron headboards. I use them to conceal everyday sleeping pillows. Decorative pillows come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including squares, circles, and rectangles, and can range in size from 12 to 18 inches in diameter. They can add a luxurious touch to an ordinary bed, but I would warn against going overboard (sorry mom). Removing all of the pillows every night and replacing them every morning gets old after a while.
European Pillows. These are large, 26-inch-square pillows that can be propped up against a headboard for support. I use them as my reading pillows. They also add a nice decorative touch to a bedroom.
Neck Rolls or Bolsters. These pillows are tube-shape and designed to support the head and neck while resting or reading. My grandmother has several of these on her bed. She uses them when she watches TV in bed—she places one behind her neck and one under each leg.
Accent Pillows. I find these types of pillows to be ridiculously expensive, but they certainly inject style onto a bed. They are generally smaller than deco pillows and are made of more expensive fabrics or are embellished with pricey beads or other trims. Accent pillows come in various shapes, including neck roll styles.
Pillow Shams. Shams are an affordable way to add texture and color to your bedroom. The shams are sized to fit regular bed pillows in standard, queen, or king sizes. I place shams over older pillows and put them in front of the pillows used for sleeping.
