Types of Vegetarians

Vegetarian is a broad term used to describe someone who does not eat meat. When we think of eating in a vegetarian vain, we simply omit the meat and believe that qualifies. Many shy away from vegetarian diets because they are unwilling to give up meat, fish or eggs. Often becoming a vegetarian is looked at as a radical and constrictive lifestyle change that is difficult to manage. However, what you may not realize is that under the heading of “vegetarian” there are different types and some of those types allow for items you may thought previously would not be allowed. Below is an explanation of the different types of vegetarians.

Flexitarian:

This is the newest type of vegetarian on the block. This may fit a wide majority of people as this person does not give up meat entirely. This is the person who wants to incorporate more vegetarian meals and low fat meat meals in his diet. Eating meat for this person would be occasional but without limitation on which kinds of meat.

Lacto-Vegetarian:

This person will still eat dairy products but not eggs or meat.

Ovo-Vegetarian:

This person will eat eggs but not meat or dairy.

Lacto-Ovo-Vegetarian:

This person will eat eggs and dairy but no meat.

Pesco-Vegetarian:

This person is sometimes referred to as pescatarian. This person does not consume animal meat or animal flesh with the exception of fish. People who go this route often have done so out of a dietary issue or as step to giving up meat (including fish) entirely. However, you can remain a pesco-vegetarian for life.

Pollo-Vegetarian:

This person still has a ban on meat and animal flesh but with the exception of poultry. So, this person will still enjoy a Thanksgiving turkey or a grilled chicken salad.

Vegan:

This is the person we normally think of when we hear the term “vegetarian”. This is the person who has given up all animal meat and animal flesh products. Any food items that have been made from animal products are also avoided such as gelatin. A Vegan would use egg substitutes and soy or almond milk as opposed to cow’s milk when baking. You will also find some vegans not willing to use honey. Many Vegans also avoid using products, such as leather or silk, which are made from animal products. Many who choose this lifestyle do so out of a political stand on animal treatment.

Raw Vegan:

This person is the same as a vegan yet eats raw foods. This person believes that foods heated over 115 degrees F, can be potentially harmful and loses nutritional value.
