Uncomfortable Feelings on the Job

Wouldn’t it be great if every day was all sunshine and dollar signs in our home businesses? Wouldn’t it be fantastic if our customers contributed to our feeling good and if running a home business meant getting rid of all those discomforts and frustrations that came with the more traditional job of working for someone else? The fact is, that while we might get rid of some of those discomforts and realities that plagued us when we worked for someone else, there are still going to be times when our work is anything but sunshine and dollar signs. Our home businesses might bring up some pretty uncomfortable feelings that we will have to figure out how to deal with.

I have learned that often the lessons I am working on in other areas of my life tend to show up in my work world too. For example, if I am wrestling with co-dependency or limit-setting or anger issues in other part of my life–with my children, friends, or extended family, those same issues have a tendency to show up at work. I may have a client who is pushing some of the same buttons or a colleague who triggers some uncomfortable and seemingly unprofessional feelings in me. We are not robots when we are working and no matter how professional or focused on business we are trying to be, feelings are going to come up and need to be dealt with.

In reality, the uncomfortable feelings that come up while we are working on our businesses are as important and as necessary as feelings that pop out in other areas of our lives and need to be tended to with the same attention. I often find that work provides a great platform for me to work through some of these themes since I feel more in control in my home business than in other areas of my life and knowing that it is my business and my lessons helps me to dig in and face whatever comes.
