Tis the season for Cheetos trees. That’s what my daughter calls the blaze orange foliage that lights up the landscape near our home. The trees around here really do look like they’ve been sprinkled with the dust and crumbs you’d find at the bottom of a bag of cheese doodles. It’s like the Jolly Green Giant downed an entire bowl of cheese puffs, and then wiped his hands on the trees’ leaves.
Makes me hungry just looking at them. But sitting in my home looking is so boring. It’s time to turn over a new leaf this fall by taking an autumn foliage adventure of a lifetime.
I already mentioned that taking a hot air balloon ride over a forest of crimson, fiery-orange, and neon yellow leaves is something I hope to do before I die, but it’s not the only unique way you can view fall’s fabulous foliage.
Another fall foliage adventure that I would love to experience is in Texas Hill Country. Cypress Valley Canopy Tours offers zip line expeditions into the heart of the season’s color show. Based 30 miles outside of Austin, you can sail through the picturesque burnt-orange leaves of the local Cypress trees on a zip line.
If high-flying leaf-peeping isn’t your cup of tea, then consider a more stable choice: horseback riding in Grand Teton National Park. Wyoming’s wilderness bursts into color this time of year and you can soak it all in at a slow pace from the back of a guided horse. Dry Ridge Outfitters offers a variety of guided tours that last anywhere from an hour to several days. The best time to hit the trails is mid-October when the Aspens and Cottonwoods are ablaze with orange and red hues. If you choose the multi-day trip you will also be treated to wildlife sightings. The fall foliage also attracts moose, elk and the occasional bear.
