Do you know Father’s Day was started? Apparently, back in the early 1900s a young woman named Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired to honor her dad in much the same way she did her mom each year on Mother’s Day. The idea of giving dads a day of their own caught on, but it took until 1956 for the occasion to be officially recognized by a joint resolution of Congress, and wasn’t until 1972 that President Nixon made it official.
If the idea of paying tribute to your dad with yet another tie just doesn’t sit well with you this year, consider the following travel gifts. No doubt one of these trips will be a present your pop will remember well into the future.
THRILL SEEKING DADS
If your dad would rather jump out of a plane than spend the day watching the ballgame in his recliner then consider gifting him with Abercrombie & Kent’s Ultimate Thrill Seeking Adventure. The 6-day trip includes airfare to South Africa where your dear ol’ dad will be strapped into a racecar and taken out on a Grand Prix course. Also included in the package deal is a chance to pull Gs in a Hunter Hawk fighter jet. If that doesn’t get his heart racing perhaps the shark diving expedition or the ATV tour will.
SPORTS-LOVING DADS
If your dad has always dreamed of hitting with the boys of summer in the big leagues consider enrolling him in an adult fantasy baseball camp. Dozens of major league baseball teams sponsor these types of camps, including the L.A. Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs. While there your father will learn how to pitch, catch and hit like the pros (or at lest dress like them in official team uniforms).
If your dad enjoys a less physical sport like golf you could gift him with the chance to see his idols in action on Father’s Day. The US Open gold tournament wraps up on Father’s Day and TSE World Golf is offering golf-loving dads the chance to attend the event in San Diego and stay in a private home so select players can stop by and tell stories when their rounds are over. If your dad is more of a player than a watcher, he might enjoy a golf getaway to Carlsbad, California’s La Costa Resort and Spa. While there, your pop can play on one of two PGA courses before dining in one the resort’s top rated restaurants.
FUN-LOVING DADS
If your dad is the life of the party and is more clown than caretaker, sign him up for the Sideshow Skills Workshop at Coney Island, New York. The multi-day program allows your dad to take sword-swallowing and fire-eating classes. In addition, it gives him the chance to learn how to make balloon animals and pull a rabbit from a hat.
