It amazes me more and more each day the things that children can now experience. Schools, teachers, and organizations are giving children now more opportunities in life than ever. Considering some of today’s family situations, I am glad that the experiences are coming from somewhere! Many students would not have these experiences without the aide of their teachers and school.
I know that there are many districts and classes out there that take children to wonderful places for real life experience and knowledge. Children in my area have taken trips to places such as Washington D.C., New York, and even to the Rain Forests. All of these trips gave the students up close and personal experiences.
The most recent unique learning experience that I read about was a winter camping survival class.
Students at Riverview Middle School in Barron bundled up and faced the cold. This is the thirteenth year that the school has given eh students an experience like no other.
The teacher, who teaches math and science, spends a week teaching the students outdoor survival skills at a camp. He introduces them to team work and trust in one another.
One night of the class is spent with the students sleeping outdoors in quinzhees made of snow piles. While the temperatures outside are much lower, the homemade shelter is typically around 40 degrees inside.
Students never know when lessons like these may come in handy and even be a lifesaver someday. Learning basic life survival and living skills is never a waste of time.
It makes me very proud that today’s education can bring much more to children than textbooks can offer. Grants, donors, and other funding can make it possible for all students to have experiences that they will keep with them for a lifetime.
