Spring has not exactly sprung here in the Upper Midwest, which means it is highly unlikely that we will be seeing tulips or daffodils blossoming in time for Easter. However, instead of lamenting about our lack of flowers I’ve decided to make my own to use as decorations for the upcoming holiday.
These candy floral creations are simple to craft, and best of all, they last a lot longer than real flowers.
CANDY SUNFLOWERS
Materials:
1 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup
1 package Reese’s Pieces Candy or M&Ms
2 yards of 1 1/2-inch wide wired yellow ribbon
1-12-inch length of heavy-duty floral wire
Green floral tape
Green silk leaves
Low temperature hot glue gun
Directions:
To form the petals, cut nine 4-inch lengths of wired ribbon.
Twist the wires at the end of each length and turn twisted ends under to form rounded edge of each petal.
Using the cardboard insert in the peanut butter cup package; cut a circle the same size as the peanut butter cup.
To form the sunflower, arrange the 9 ribbon petals in a circular pattern on the candy cardboard insert.
Pinch the other end of each petal, and glue to the center of the cardboard circle.
To form the stem, wrap the floral wire with the green floral tape, using a twisting motion. Insert the leaves as you wrap the stem. Glue the top end of the wire stem to the center of the cardboard disc on top of the petals.
Glue an unwrapped peanut butter cup (still in the paper cup) to the center of the petals and complete by gluing brown colored Reese’s pieces or M&Ms to the peanut butter cup center.
Repeat to create a candy bouquet centerpiece or place them in Easter baskets and place them around your home, but be sure your guests know they are not to eat.
