Unprepared for School

The past summer has been very busy for my family. There has been little time for rest and relaxation for this homeschool mom. I recently started a new business, put more effort into publishing my unit studies, and write. Last summer I spent time on my porch reading books and playing with the kids. I had ample time to schedule out the fall. In fact, I looked forward to scheduling the new school year. It was so relaxing to sit on my porch with all my organizational tools and list of books and curriculum in arm’s reach while the kids played in the front yard. I had maybe a few afternoons all summer long where I could just sit on my porch. I am seriously thinking of scheduling some time off except the school year is starting. So, I am entering it excited to get back to a normal schedule but worn out from my busy summer and unprepared for lack of organizing the year.

What’s a mom to do?

I know I am not the only one in this position. Hardly, am I the only busy mom with a tray of full plates balanced above her head tittering with every step. I know I am not the only homeschool mom feeling very unprepared and disorganized. So what do we do about it?

Take time to relax: I know you have not one minute to spare but it is essential to the success of your home and homeschool to take an evening to relax. Hire a sitter or put your husband on kid duty and take time for just you.

Plan and organize in peace and quiet: Many of us have no choice but to learn to block out the noise of a busy home. However, when its crunch time the noise is harder to block out, at least for me. So, find your favorite spot and take a few hours to plan out your new fall schedule. I think I will take an afternoon on my porch while my husband takes the kids out for a day. This will give you the time to relax and reflect on your goals for the new year.

Remember: Take a moment to remind yourself why you homeschool. Take time to reflect on the memories you have created that will be cherished in the future. Often this helps navigate you back to the blessings and that alone can re-energize you.
