Upcoming Genealogy Events – Week of April 29, 2012

conference room Have you been thinking about attending a genealogy class, conference, workshop, or event? This could be the week that you go out and do it! There are plenty of genealogy related events happening all across the United States. Here are just a few.

On April 29, 2012, Temple Beth Israel, which is located in Skokie, Illinois, will host a meeting of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Illinois, (JGSI) It will include a special program called “The 1940 Census and Online Finding Aids”. It will be presented by Dr. Joel Weintraub, an emeritus biology professor at California State University. It is free for JGSI members, and will cost $10.00 for non-members to attend. It will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon.

On May 1, 2012, the Forsyth County Public Library, which is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will hold a series of nine free genealogy workshops. The first one is called “More Than Land Descriptions: Treasures Among the Deeds”, and it will be presented by Linda Woodward Geiger. It will begin at 6:30 in the evening.

On May 5, 2012, the Forsyth County Public Library, which is located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will hold the second in a series of nine free genealogy workshops. This one is called “Genealogy Legacy? Or Heritage?” It will be presented by genealogist and author Robert A. Sapp. It will begin at 1:00 in the afternoon.

On May 5, 2012, the Lodge in Brainerd Lakes, which is located in Baxter, Minnesota, will host the Crow Wing County Genealogy Conference 2012. This is being presented by the Brainerd Public Library. The library requests that you contact them to pre-register for this free conference. It will begin at 12:30 in the afternoon and will end at 4:30 in the evening. Speakers and topics include:

“Introduction to Oral History” It is an overview of oral history, its evolution, practical how-to’s interviewing techniques, and applications. It will be presented by Barbara Sommer.

“Using the Internet for My Genealogy” It will focus on effective searches, key genealogy web sites, how to find quality information on the web, and keeping track of your research. It will be presented by Tom Rice.

“Genealogy Detours: Solving Problems with Indirect Evidence” Learn how to solve a problem when you can find no direct evidence answering your question. It will be presented by Jay Fonkert.
