Upcoming Genealogy Events – Week of January 8, 2012

pencil and notebook All across the United States, there are opportunities for genealogists to attend a workshop, take a class, or participate in a genealogy event. You can start your quest to locate one by checking out this quick list. If you don’t see a genealogy event near to where you live, then you can try searching your local newspaper for one.

On January 8, 2012, the Jewish Genealogical Society of Colorado, which is located in Boulder, Colorado, will be holding a double session of genealogy programs. Kahlile Mehr will present a program that will help you understand the archival situation in Ukraine and Poland, the content of those collections, how to get there, and general research procedures.

The program focusing on Ukraine will start at 10:00 in the morning, and will end at noon. The program focusing on Poland will start at noon, and end at 2:00 in the afternoon. If you want to attend both sessions, they suggest you bring a lunch (that must be dairy or vegetarian) with you.

On January 8, 2012, the Snohomish Library, located in Snohomish, Washington, will hold a class for genealogists who want to learn the basics about how to use computer tools to trace their ancestry. Preregistration is required, and seating is limited.

On January 9, 2012, the Clayton Library Center for Genealogical Research, which is located in Houston, Texas, will host a free educational lecture. It will be presented by Susan Kaufman, who is the manager at the Center. The lecture will discuss genealogy research. It will begin at 10:00 in the morning, and will end at 11:30 in the morning.

On January 10, 2012, the Indian River Genealogical Society, which is located in Vero Beach, Florida, will hold a general meeting. The featured speaker will be Sharon Tate Moody, who is a retired law enforcement officer, and graduate of the FBI National Academy. Her presentation is called “Developing a Strategy for Research Success”. The presentation will begin at 10:45 in the morning, after the meeting is over.

On January 10, 2012, the Hoffman Center, which is located in Tillamook County, Oregon, will begin hosting a four week genealogy course. It is called “Introduction to Family History”. Karen Merrill Martin, who has a certificate in Genealogical Studies from the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, will be the instructor. The course will start at 2:00 in the afternoon, and end at 3:00 in the afternoon. It will cost $40.00 to take all four classes.

On January 11, 2012, the Indian River County Main Library, which is located in Vero Beach, Florida, will begin a series of eight classes about Beginners Genealogy. This first class will begin at 9:30 in the morning. It will cost $35.00.

On January 12, 2012, the New Orleans Public Library, which is located in New Orleans, Louisiana, will begin its annual Black History Month Series. It will start with a Dr. Martin Luther King birthday celebration. The theme for this year’s series will focus on African-American women. There will be a genealogy workshop, presentations, and films.
