Update on Bret Michaels and Hugh Hefner Saves the Hollywood Sign

As you have probably heard, former Poison frontman Bret Michaels suffered a painful brain hemorrhage last Thursday and has been in critical condition every since. His rep today said that while he remains in critical condition, he is stable, but he got another health setback today. He has been diagnosed with hypoatremia, a lack of sodium in his body that can cause seizures. Michaels’ rep declined to say whether the rocker had actually suffered any seizures or not.

The doctors continue to run tests, trying to find the cause of the bleeding at the stem of his brain. Some are speculating that it wasn’t his emergency appendectomy surgery earlier this month or his lifelong battle with Type 1 Diabetes that cause the hemorrhage, but rather a head injury caused by a prop at the Tony Award last June.

I absolutely love the Hollywood Sign. It is an identifying, it not often hard to locate, symbol of Hollywood. But, the sign has seen its share of problems over the years and this past week, the land it sits on was in danger of being sold if funds weren’t raised to save it.

What was going to happen if the land was sold? Well, developers were eyeing the 138 acres the sign sits on for mansions and hotels. A non-profit organization was desperately trying to raise money to purchase the land for $12.5 million and keep it undeveloped. As time was running out, the organization was still almost a million dollars short when an unlikely hero stepped in – Playboy founder Hugh Hefner.

Hefner donated the additional $900,000 needed to save the land. He said, “It would have been a real shame after having restored it if it wound up being sold.” He went on to tell PEOPLE, “It’s become something iconic and represents not only the town but represents Hollywood dreams, and I think it’s something worth preserving.”

Hooray for Hef!
