I’ve been following the recovery of Roger Ebert for months now and am happy to report that the film critic is making major strides on his road to recovery from cancer surgery. In fact, he’s accomplished more during his “recovery period” than most healthy people do in a lifetime.
Since last fall Ebert has published three books, has two more on the way, and is doing interviews to promote them… even though he still can’t speak yet (one of his surgeries left him unable to speak). It’s possible thanks to a special laptop that speaks the words as he types them.
When he’s not tapping out answers to interviewers questions, Ebert says he is busy adding a page to the “Ebert & Roeper” website. Dubbed as the largest collection of video-based movie reviews online, the addition will include 5,000 movie reviews and span more than 20 years of Ebert’s career along with reviews by his fellow critics, the late Gene Siskel and Richard Roeper.
Ebert says the site will offer movie buffs a chance to watch “spirited – sometimes really spirited – discussions about movies” that always end with reviewers giving them a “thumbs-up” or “thumbs-down.” And they can see more recent shows featuring Roeper and guest reviewers including Jay Leno and The New York Times film critic A.O. Scott.
Despite his recent health concerns, Ebert continues to write film reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times (he’s been doing so since 1967 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1975). As for a return to his popular TV show Ebert says he’s not sure when he will be back on air. He says he still needs to undergo surgery that will hopefully restore his voice, but he says the good news is that he is cancer-free… and he can walk again. After being hospitalized so long that he had to learn how to move all over again. Now he says he is up to 12,000 steps a day.
