Why wait until you’re in the middle of holiday preparations to start getting ready for guests? Now is a great time to update the guest room, before things get too crazy.
If you do a few projects yourself, you can save some money while transforming the guest room. Also, take care not to overlook existing items. Some things you already have may work well in that space, if given a little love.
If the bed in your guest room is outdated, consider redoing the headboard. If the piece just isn’t something you can work with, consider removing the headboard (and foot-board if applicable). Retain the bed frame, the mattress, and the box spring and create your own unique headboard.
If you go with an upholstered headboard, look for a bed cover (or make one) that coordinates with your fabric. It makes sense to buy neutral sheets and pillowcases so you can use them with any comforter or duvet cover. Add a soft throw and some accent pillows, and the bed is complete.
Now, add a chair so guests can sit to read, talk on the phone, or put on their shoes. Look for a single chair at factory discount centers or pick up a used chair and give it a fresh coat of paint. Cover the chair cushion with leftover headboard fabric and add another accent pillow. Update other pieces of furniture as well.*
Freshen up the lighting. You may not have to replace existing lamps if you update the lampshades. Buy some new ones in more modern styles, or update existing shades by recovering with fabric or use a faux painting technique.
When you accessorize, look at items you already have and see how they can be re-worked. Add some books or new magazines in a pretty box or basket, or repaint that old magazine rack that’s collecting dust in the basement. That tin trashcan that currently features Sponge Bob Squarepants (but has now been outgrown) can be covered with a little wallpaper or strips of wallpaper border or can be painted so it looks like a custom wastebasket meant for the guest room.
Adding a few candles around the room is a great way to pick up another color from the bedding and carry it throughout the space.
