If you like the Retro look and want to incorporate this style into your décor, the new retro is achieved by mixing and matching rather than featuring one color. Instead of a monochromatic space filled with shades of turquoise, the new retro mixes colors to achieve the desired effect. Turquoise mixed with chocolate brown creates a contrast that adds more interest. Throw in some lime green or orange as an accent.
Kitchen or Dining Area
Colored appliances are popular, as is mixing and matching place settings in retro colors. To tie colors together, fabric treatments such as tablecloths or curtains use geometric patterns in coordinating colors. Vinyl, from placemats to chairs, also adds to the mix, as do uniquely shaped vases and other containers. Colors reminiscent of 50’s and 60’s kitchens are back in play and there are plenty of paint choices and new wallpaper designs to enhance this style.
Bedroom
Bedspreads replace comforters and fun and funky shag accent rugs add a retro touch. Today’s shags are more luxurious and easy to care for than those from the past, and they are available in many styles and colors. Many fabrics are offered in fun retro style patterns, which can be used to create unique accent pillows and window treatments.
Living Space or Family Room
Low tables and lamps with extra tall bases or exaggerated shapes are also popular. While furniture should be more modern to create that updated feel, lamps and other items may be original pieces from decades past, often found at yard sales and thrift shops or in attics and basements. You can also find reproductions. Large chunky accessories such as huge, unusually shaped ashtrays or candy dishes in bright colors add to the fun, as do ashtray stands and umbrella stands. Artwork, window treatments, and rugs may be used to pull different colors together.
