Has your genealogy research revealed that you have an ancestor who was in the military? Perhaps you have uncovered more than one. It is fairly common for a person to decide to grow up and become involved in the same career that his or her parents, grandparents, or earlier ancestors did. This is true for a career in some branch of the military as well. The Nationwide Gravesite Locator can help you find the grave of your ancestors who have served in the military.
The Nationwide Gravesite Locator is one of many websites where you can find some information about your ancestors who served in the military. You can sort through military records at Ancestry.com as well. They have many featured collections that you can search through. Or, you can enter your ancestor’s name, and other information, into their search engine, and see what results come up. The National Archives are another great website to use if you are trying to find the military records of your ancestors. They have helpful links that tell you military records you can find on this website, how to search through them, and how to begin. These websites are some examples of excellent resources to use to find the military records of an ancestor. However, if you are hoping to find their grave, you will need to try a different source.
The Nationwide Gravesite Locator is a website run by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The Veterans Administration was established in 1930, but it was not until 1973 that the Veterans Administration took over responsibility for the National Cemetery System. They operate the National Cemetery System, keep a record of all the graves of all the people who are buried in both the national and the state cemeteries, and more. This responsibility was passed to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs when it was established in 1989.
Use the search engine on their webpage to find the grave of your ancestor who served in the United States military. Choose the cemetery you want to search through. Put in the name, birthday, and day of death for the ancestor whose gravesite you wish to locate. It is a simple tool to use, and a good way to get started. They suggest that you contact the cemetery that the grave is located in for further information about the gravesite. The Nationwide Gravesite Locater does not have information about the military graves that are located overseas.
