Using Fertility Monitors

When you are trying to get pregnant, you can improve the odds by identifying your best days for conception. The average woman will take anywhere from six to eighteen months to get pregnant. Fertility monitors can help identify your most fertile days to conceive.

All ovulation testing products work by detecting the surge of luteinizing hormone which precedes ovulation. Some fertility monitors use urine for testing and others use saliva. The testing process takes just a minute or two every morning.

There is some evidence to suggest fertility monitors do result in quicker conception. Inverness Medical Innovations, the maker of the Clear Blue Easy Fertility Monitor commissioned a study of their product. The study was conducted by physicians with 653 women who were trying to conceive.

The women were divided into two groups, one of which was given the Clear Blue Easy monitor to use in the study. The participants kept a diary every day and included information pertinent to trying to conceive and their cycles. The group that was given the fertility monitors had a higher rate of conception. Twenty three percent of the women using the monitors got pregnant within two months, compared to fourteen percent in the group not using the monitors.

Another benefit of using a fertility monitor is that it stores the data about your cycles and fertile days for up to six months. This information is valuable for both you and your doctor. If you go for a consultation with an infertility specialist, take the information from the monitor with you.

Fertility monitors are easy to use. In the morning, you will urinate on the testing stick. Your fertility level for that day will be shown on the digital screen on the front of the monitor. The information will be stored in the monitor for future reference.

The monitor will show the two days of peak fertility, which give the best chance of conception occurring. In addition, a monitor will show your days of high fertility just before the peak. Since sperm survives for several days in the body, this will further increase your chances of successful conception.

If you don’t conceive after several months of using the monitor, you may want to see your doctor. In many cases, the monitor is used in combination with other treatments or testing. Make an appointment with your doctor if you have been trying for a year, or six months if you are over the age of 30.
