Using Holidays to Promote Your Business

Holidays just seem to be ready-made promotional opportunities for businesses–think of the “President’s Day” sales, “4th of July” and other holiday-themed marketing opportunities. Even though you may not be a huge corporation, you can still capitalize on holidays in marketing and promoting your own home business.

At the very least, holidays can provide an opportunity for you to make contact with your customers. You’ve likely heard of sending birthday and anniversary cards to clients and potential customers as a friendly, public relations gesture. But who’s to say that you can’t adopt another holiday or holidays for your business. You might even be able to find one that really fits with the type of service or products you provide. Even if it’s obscure like National Goat Farmer’s Day–if it fits your business, it’s the perfect opportunity to send out cards or notices, offer a special discount, or even throw some sort of event to commemorate the day (if you were a goat farmer selling your artisinal cheeses, think of all the possibilities with National Goat Farmer’s Day!)

Holidays provide the chance for your to do some create thinking and promotions. If you are a small consulting business, you may want to pick a few holidays throughout the year and send out a little card, a related article, or some special item fitting with the day. Someone who works selling children’s toys or educational items might want to choose a few fun children’s oriented holidays (the first day of summer, Halloween, etc.) and develop some promotional ideas around kids and families.

The possibilities are as limited as your imagination and creative effort. With a little research, you can find out all the major holidays and minor commemorative days as well. Some calendars now list all sorts of celebration possibilities or you can go online to find out what the national declared days, weeks and months are to see what you can find that fits your home business.
