There are two times of the year when my family tends to get new (or new to us) clothing. The first is during the late spring to early summer, when yard sales and outgrown clothing sales are plentiful. The second is right now, during the holiday season. Here is why.
Right now, the holiday sales are almost too good to be true. They will get even better after Christmas, but the selection will dwindle. To determine whether you should shop now or later, consider how desperate you are for certain types of clothing. Can you get by if you don’t find what you want? Wait until after the holidays. Your daughter’s dresses are starting to look like shirts instead? Shop now.
Anytime you are ready to stock clothing, the first thing you should do is to make a list of your needs, including sizes. This way, you’ll avoid buying or obtaining too many of one thing and not enough of another.
Be careful about comparing sales for what you need. We were able to hit a great 40 percent off everything sale (including clearance) the other day. Some sales are better than others, though, so don’t just jump at something unless it really seems like a bargain.
The other way that you can stock up on clothing is through gently used items. Often, around the holidays, people are ready to clean out their closets and make a new start of things. You can find a lot of great clothing now at thrift shops and consignment stores as these stores are getting in an influx of new stuff.
You can also let friends and family know that you are willing to take anything that they might no longer have a use for. You can let them know the sizes that you seek and pass on any items that don’t work for you.
