If you or someone you know is going through a divorce it can be overwhelming trying to go through all the different steps in the process. Most people don’t know what questions are important to ask your lawyer, what to make sure is in your decree, what you should fight for, what you shouldn’t; and trying to decipher through all the legalese can be a nightmare.
I remember feeling totally lost. I didn’t even know how to file for divorce, let alone who I needed to talk to and what I needed to say. When you are in the middle of a divorce emotions are so high that to add the confusion of legal matters on top of it can seem daunting to say the least. Luckily there are many resources available to help you through.
Just this week Barnes and Noble came out with The Divorce Handbook: A Simple Guide to Each Step of the Process by Deborah Hanson, who wrote the book using first hand knowledge from a messy divorce of her own. She uses the things that she learned after being in an out of court for four years; things she wished she had known the first time around, but learned the hard way. It is meant to be a quick reference and breaks down some of the more difficult legal terms into something that is easier to understand. There are tips to finding a good lawyer, what to include in your decree, how to cut the cost of the divorce and other fees, and so many other things.
No one wants to be in this situation, but if you or someone you know is going through a divorce this is a great resource for them as they are struggling through the process. Arm yourself with knowledge. The less overwhelmed you are going into it, the more smoothly things will go and you can feel comforted knowing that you haven’t missed something important. The information is at your fingertips, you just have to reach out and use it.
