Utilizing Your Stored Wheat

You may want to consider utilizing the wheat you have in your food storage. Wheat is an excellent source of protein and other important nutrients. If you do not eat whole-wheat items on a regular basis, it can upset your stomach, as you become use to the added fiber. This is one reason to use your wheat on a regular basis. Another is to keep it as fresh as possible. A third is that you can save money if you buy whole wheat, and grind it into flour yourself. Here are five ways you can use wheat in your everyday recipes.

1) You can make homemade wheat bread. This is my favorite way to use wheat. As a child my father would make homemade wheat bread every other Saturday. He began by grinding the wheat into flour. He did use a combination of white and wheat flour in the bread so that it wasn’t quite so heavy. If you are making homemade wheat bread you should have gluten on hand, as this will help the bread to rise.

2) You can sneak wheat flour into your desserts and brownies. You may want to test the recipes out before trying them out on company because whole wheat flour is slightly heavier, and you may need to adjust the amount of baking powder or soda you use. You can also opt to try recipes specifically for whole-wheat flour.

3) You can simply toss a handful in with soups or stews that you are making. If you do this be sure that you allow enough time for the wheat to fully cook before you serve it to your family. There is something very unappetizing about chewy wheat in soup. (I know from experience—my parents often did this when I was growing up.)

4) You can grow sprouts. This is a healthy way to eat your wheat. Sprouts are easy to start and add a unique flavor to your sandwiches and salads.

5) You can make wheat berries, which can use in the place of rice. You can also flavor the wheat berries so that they taste barbecued or like baked beans.
