Vacation Savings: Dining

Even if you pick a travel destination that fits nicely within the budget, you may find that you quickly spend more than your means in other areas during your vacation. Food and drink costs can quickly add up. Here are some ways that you can save and get those costs under control.

Drink wisely

Every member of your family should own a reusable water bottle. You can fill them up before you leave the house with water or your own homemade lemonade, ice tea, etc. This will at least eliminate a trip to the concession stand or fast food place when you are out sightseeing. You can often find water fountains to refill.

When you do stop for a restaurant meal, order water instead of other drinks to save money. If you want some flavor, ask for a lemon with your water. (Add a bit of sugar along with the lemon for the kids–instant and free lemonade.

Lunch bunch

Stick with lunch as your biggest or fanciest meal. The prices for lunch are often much less than for dinner at most restaurants. There are usually plenty of lunch specials available, some so large that they can be split with others in your family or group.

At popular restaurants, it easier to make a reservation at lunch as opposed to dinner, saving you time, as well.

Kids eat free

Take advantage of kids eat free restaurants and deals. Most family friendly chain restaurants and even many privately own restaurants offer this deal during weekdays. Don’t forget about other ways to save, such as coupons, getting a free meal on your birthday and ordering appetizers for the kids instead of those expensive kids meals. Appetizers will generally give you a lot more food for the same or less money than the packaged “under 10” meals.
