Are you celebrating Valentine’s Day tonight? If you have young children, then you may have opted out of partying ‘til the break of dawn this year because… it’s a Monday. Celebrating anything on the first day of the work week is about as anti-climatic as it gets.
Then, there’s the whole babysitting factor. Securing a sitter on Valentine’s Day can be tricky. If you have a teenage sitter, there’s a good chance her parents won’t allow her to work on a school night. Meanwhile, older sitters often have sweethearts of their own and don’t want to spend the night wrangling tykes coming down from sugar highs.
So, how do you make the holiday fun for the entire family? Consider the following ideas:
Make Dinner Together: Choose a chocolate theme and make menu items that include the sweet treat, such as Chocolate Soup and Chocolate Covered Strawberries. Or go with an easier red theme whereby you can make pepperoni and red pepper pizza, drink fruit punch and cleanse your palates with raspberry sorbet.
Go Romantic: Have fun with the kids by adding romantic touches to your home. Have dinner by candlelit or spread out a picnic in the middle of a flower-filled living room. You don’t have to go broke buying fresh blossoms; rather, decorate with artificial flowers or buy bunches of inexpensive blooms. End the night by turning on some love songs and dancing together as a group.
Move Night: Rent some family-friendly romantic comedies or animated flicks, such as The Princess Bride, Herbie the Love Bug or Beauty and the Beast. You can add to the ambience by snuggling under a large comforter or sharing space on the floor amongst a mountain of pillows. Finally, cap off the night by having each family member list a few things they love most about everyone in the room.
