Variety. We all need it. We all need a change of scenery now and again, and that applies to our homes as well. Since most of us cannot completely remodel or redecorate whenever the urge strikes, we find other ways to sneak in some variety.
The change of seasons and the approach of holidays give us a chance to change the look and feel of our homes temporarily, without going overboard. In addition, seasonal and holiday decorating are great fun! We get four seasons and at least half a dozen holidays worthy of decorations. That’s ten chances to decorate (unless we mix a season with a holiday here and there).
Adding brightness for spring and summer and warmth for fall and winter are good places to start. Of course, holidays lend themselves to decorating, just don’t let your designs become too predictable. Add a few new things each year, and dare to do something different. Retailers offer a huge variety of items to choose from for any given holiday. The colors move in trends, often corresponding at least in part, with design and fashion industries.
If the hot décor colors for this year include exotic colors, for example, you can expect to see these colors in style for Christmas decorations. While traditional Christmas colors are great, it’s nice to try something different. Also, don’t be afraid to step outside a trend. You can use your own unique color schemes instead.
Another example is turning up the color choices for fall decorating. While we often choose the colors of the changing leaves, which is very fitting, we can also kick it up a notch, or even tone it down a notch. Try bright reds, oranges, yellows, instead of brick red, burnt orange and gold. Or, go the other way and try deep burgundy, chocolate brown, and taupe.
Spice it up a little this year!
