Vegetarian Diets

Many people think when they hear the word vegetarian of a meal consisting of green
leafy vegetables and that is all! A vegetarian diet is not just all vegetables being eaten.
Some individuals will eat fish or chicken, not on a daily basis, but a few times a month.
Vegetarians mostly will eat eggs, dairy products, soy products, beans, grains, fruits, and
vegetables. Don’t confuse Vegans with Vegetarians; Vegans eliminate all animal
products.

Are there health problems of people who choose to eliminate certain products from their
diet? Do they take vitamin supplements?

Surprisingly, there are many foods today which are being produced with vegetarians in
mind. Many vegetarians become non-meat eaters due to the way eating meat makes their
bodies feel and not just to make a political stance. There are vitamins, supplements, and
vitamin enriched foods as well as plenty of organic and natural stores to find these
products. In populated towns, there are at least one vegetarian restaurant and many
Indian food restaurants are strictly vegetarian. Have you ever tasted all their delicious
foods? It is being introduced into a whole other way of cooking!

Besides tofu, soy, and beans, there have been many vegetarian foods introduced into the
regular food stores. Organic and natural food companies like Annie’s, Amy’s, and
Cascadian Farms offer vegetarian and vegan soups, frozen foods, vegetables, and cereals!
To be a vegetarian is not the old thinking of eating a bowl of rice and beans and eating a
bag of spinach, it has become so much more.

People have found themselves not eating as much meat due to the findings of doctor’s
and the study on colon cancer. The protein diet can still be accomplished by eating eggs
and other protein and fiber enriched foods over red meat. Some vegetarians will eat some
fish but it all depends on the individual.

Before deciding to begin a vegetarian diet, research and ask other vegetarians about the
diet involved. Ask how to slowly introduce the body into eating less meat and ask the
positive and negatives and any of your concerns before going full fledge into a new
eating lifestyle. The main concern is for your body and your mind to feel and be the
greatest it can be. If it means eliminating meat from the diet, then that is a decision each
person makes.
