We’re huge Veggie fans at my house, and my kids were delighted when I brought home “A Snoodle’s Tale.” We’ve never seen it before, and our anticipation was not wasted. We really liked it.
We start the show with Bob, who is excited to welcome Larry home from Danish Immersion Camp. But when Larry’s bus arrives, he confesses that he only attended Danish Camp for one day – then he got lost and ended up at Overdone British Literary Adaptations Camp across the lake. But not to worry – he came home with a great idea for a story, just right to help a young viewer who is worried about how his peers see him. The story is called “Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly.”
Dr. Jiggle is a shy gourd who is embarrassed about his round stomach. He wants to dance, but every time he tries, his stomach jiggles, and everyone makes fun of him. So he creates a formula in his laboratory to transform himself into a cool, slender dude with a bright orange ‘fro. At night, he slips out into the street, turns on his boom box and grooves to some jammin’ music. Everyone stops to watch him dance, and he’s quite the life of the party, but when the formula wears off, he goes right back to being Dr. Jiggle. When his friends find out what he’s been doing, they give him the courage to try dancing as himself, just one more time, and he discovers that he can dance no matter what he looks like.
Our “Silly Songs with Larry” is quite a commentary on our time. Called “Sport Utility Vehicle,” it’s about Larry and Miss Achmetha, each in their new SUVs. They meet up at the gas pump, compliment each other on their choice of vehicle, and then sing about all the things they can do because they have SUVs and no one else does. It’s hysterical.
Our last segment is called “A Snoodle’s Tale” and is told in Dr. Seuss-style rhyme. In a far off place, there is a village full of snoodles. Every fourth Tuesday, a new snoodle drops down a chute from a tall tower in the center of town, and this is how new snoodles are born. On this particular day, a young snoodle was delivered with high hopes. He had a backpack on, and inside was a box of paints and a horn. He was delighted to realize that he must have a talent for art and music, and that’s why he came with these gifts. He also had wings, but his first experiment with flight went a little awry. All the other snoodles teased him and cut him down, but then he met the man who had created the snoodles, and was told that he was more special than he realized. A perfect metaphor for our relationship with our Heavenly Father, it made me all sniffly.
If you’re collecting the VeggieTales movies, you will want to add “A Snoodle’s Tale” to the list.
