In today’s society it is becoming easier to live a sedentary lifestyle and feel as if you not missing out. We have texting, Facebook, video games, YouTube, TV, DVRs, Chat Rooms, and so many things competing for our glazed eyes as we sit our bottoms in an unforgiving chair. Typing or gaming fingers seem to be the only body part doing aerobic activity. Teens who do not know life before microwaves and Xbox are victims of living a life in a seated position. Today’s young people are more likely to venture into the world wide web then breath in fresh air and run in the wide natural world. Today’s streets are filled with danger on every corner from crazy people to drug pushers which makes parents just as happy to see their kid safe and sound in front of the TV or computer screen. It’s time to learn that those boots were made for walking not sitting by the back door waiting for the next trip to the burger joint.
You know that your kid needs to refresher course in the outdoors if he looks at you quizzically when you show him a pair of roller blades unknowing what to do with such devices. This is not unusual in today’s society but a condition that needs to be remedied. In my neighborhood you are more likely to see a traveling circus driving down the street than a kid playing outside. It’s time to turn off the TV and get outside and play. Kids today spend too much time munching on chips in front of screens and not enough time kicking soccer balls.
Encourage your cave dweller to explore a new world by taking up a sport. Your child is more likely to take up a sport if the whole family is involved. Biking, golfing, and swimming make excellent family sports since everyone can participate on their own level. Even if your family is not athletic you can kick a ball around the front yard or throw a football. Take the dog for a long walk or go on a hike at your local park. Soon you will see your cave dweller live in the real world and leave the virtual stuff for rainy days or times when the flu bug comes to call.
If your little gamer just cannot give up the controller then invest in active gaming. That’s right in today’s virtual world you can play sports and have a dance competition without ever leaving your living room. This can no means replace real physical exercise but you have to start somewhere, huh? The Wii boxing game will burn 125 calories in 15 minutes of intense play. Even bowling can burn 77 calories in 15 minutes. Now just replace the chips with carrots and your child may survive the video world in proper shape yet.
