My mom is beside herself today, thrilled by the news that she now has the chance to sleep in the same bed as her all time favorite movie character—Maria Von Trapp.
If you are a die-hard fan of “The Sound of Music” (like my mom) then you’ll be delighted to know that the former Salzburg, Austria home of the Family Von Trapp – made famous by the popular 1965 movie musical starring Julie Andrews – is being turned into a hotel.
The “Villa Trapp” sits on an idyllic piece of property on the outskirts of Salzburg and come July the hills there will be alive with the sound of cash registers raking in the dough as visitors line up to sleep in the same bedrooms as the Von Trapp’s seven children, not to mention Maria (played by Andrews in the hit movie) and the Captain (played by Christopher Plummer). The hotel is also catering to prospective brides and grooms who will be able to marry in the Von Trapp’s private chapel.
According to local tourism officials, the park surrounding the hotel will also be open to the public and refreshments and souvenirs will be sold in a pavilion to be built there. If you go don’t forget to bring your camera as some of the original furnishings that once belonged to the family will also be on display on the property.
The villa will officially open with a huge party on July 25th. As for how much it will set you back to live like one of the Von Trapp’s, hotel owners say a standard room at the villa will run about $180 per night.
But can you really put a price tag on the opportunity to spend time in such a well-known structure?
According to local tourism officials, the real Von Trapp family lived in the villa from 1923 to 1938. It was confiscated in 1939 by the Nazis and subsequently lived in by Nazi security chief Heinrich Himmler until 1945. As for the Von Trapp family, they eventually settled in Vermont.
