Vinyl Lettering for the Home

I used to work in a sign shop. Hand painting was my specialty, but it has become somewhat of a lost art with the advent of incredible computers and other sign making technology.

Precision cut, pressure-sensitive, vinyl lettering and printed banners are now more popular than hand painting in all but a few niche markets. The good news is vinyl lettering is great stuff. You can use it indoors and out for lettering everything from mailboxes, address plates, and bicycles, to specialty signs and art pieces, including decorating windows and walls.

You can order letters online or visit a local sign shop and choose lettering in a variety of sizes, fonts, colors, and finishes. Some shops offer pre-cut sheets of letters but you can get those anywhere. Go ahead and have something custom made. This is a great way to add some color, style, or a personal touch without using paint or wallpaper.

Spell out your child’s name across the wall of his or her room. Vinyl lettering is easy to install and can be removed. It won’t peel off on its own, at least not for many years, but you can work an edge loose and gently peel it off if you decide to re-do the space. Works great in apartments, dorms, or rental homes too because it can be removed easily from most painted surfaces.

There are symbols and logos and other designs available along with letters and numbers. Vinyl lettering is usually quite affordable, especially considering its long life. You can generally find lettering in assorted sizes from as small as half inch (some ever smaller) up to 2-4 feet high. Vinyl letters are great for labeling sports gear and other items or pinstriping bikes, skateboards, and even vehicles.

Here’s a great page of simple, clear instructions for installing vinyl letters, complete with step by step photos, offered by Stickerz.com. You can order letters there too and the site includes a convenient pricing page. They’ll also send you a free squeegee for applying letters, with each offer.
