Our Visiting Teaching message for the month of February as found in the Ensign is entitled, “The Family is Central to the Creator’s Plan.”
Robert D. Hales tells us that we learn about families from our own heavenly parents. We desire to become like our Heavenly Father, and so we strive to do the things He has done, and He is truly a Father. We have had the family unit since the beginning of time. Adam and Eve were married, but not just married—they were also sealed. Because of the keys that have been restored, we too have that opportunity. The family relationship is the most treasured and valued in mortality.
President Henry B. Eyring states that as we seek to gain eternal life, having a family unit is fundamental. As we interact with our families, we are practicing to belong to the larger eternal family in the Celestial Kingdom. We are encouraged to pray for guidance in our preparation for this blessing. We are promised help from the powers of heaven as we do this.
Margaret S. Lifferth concludes the message with her thoughts of how badly children need positive uplifting examples, especially from their mothers and fathers. As we strive to be personally obedient and to live the gospel, our children will see us and want to be like us. Our righteousness is one of the most important things we can give our children.
On a personal note, I remember when the Proclamation to the World was given. It was just after my husband and I were married, and it seemed like the perfect way to start off our lives together. As we’ve had children and come face to face with the challenges that brought, I’ve been so grateful for the counsel given in that proclamation, and so I’m even more thankful for this Visiting Teaching message this month. They are always so timely.
