Did you know that your voice can change throughout your life? Talking too much for too long can strain your voice; too much strain can lead to permanent change in your voice. You may end up with a deeper and/or raspier voice. Some women find that their voices start to change and deepen in their thirties. So what can you do to protect your golden tones?
- Make room for some quiet time in every day. The more you talk, the more often you should give your voice a break — like if you are a teacher or work in sales. Set aside fifteen minutes of silence two or three times a day to give your voice a rest.
- Drink plenty of water. If your vocal cords dry out, they can be more prone to strain or injury. Sip water throughout the day — keep a water bottle at your desk.
- Avoid alcohol.
- Quit smoking. Smoking does a lot of damage to your body!
- Cut back on caffeine. Though caffeine can give you a welcome jolt of energy, it can also steal water from your body.
- Rule out physical causes. Vocal cord injury or damage can change your voice. Acid reflux can leave you feeling hoarse — as many as forty percent of people with acid reflux have no signs beside a frog in the throat.
- Take care of colds and allergies. Being stuffed up can change your voice, but a serious or chronic illness can mess with your pitch.
- Take care of laryngitis. Forcing yourself to talk when your body doesn’t want to can put a strain on your voice.
- Give yourself a silent weekend once in a while. It’s definitely a challenge, but your vocal cords will appreciate the vacation.
- When you really need your voice, be sure to pamper yourself. Sip hot tea with lemon and honey — skip the milk, the mucus can gum up your throat. Drink lots of water, too!
