Volunteer Vacations in Paradise

I’ve written about the growing trend of volunteer vacations (often referred to as voluntourism) in previous blogs, but I’m always taken aback when I learn of yet another package being offered to people who willing give up their time away from the office to help others.

If you are one of those generous souls then this next deal is one you might find hard to pass up.

The Hanalei Colony Resort located on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai is partnering with Limahuli Garden to offer a package that combines fun and fulfillment. It’s called the Beach & Botany Package and it requires you to make a minimum commitment of two daily four-hour volunteer sessions per person at the tropical botanical garden.

Volunteer activities at Limahuli Garden take place at 8 a.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays—-you pick which days work best for you. While there you will spend the morning assisting the garden’s staff by choosing which of three activity levels best suits your physical capabilities and outdoor experience. You can choose from laid-back contributions in the nursery to a more demanding job of completing ecological restoration in the Limahuli Preserve. (By the way, the minimum age for volunteers is 14.)

The vacation part of the package takes place at the resort where you can choose to stay five or seven nights. In addition to your lodging, you will receive a picnic basket lunch for two, a one-day kayak rental for two on the Hanalei River, an oceanside massage for two from Hanalei Day Spa, and a special arrival gift for “tropical gardeners.”

The resort offers 48 two-bedroom condominium units with full kitchens and private decks, all with views of Hanalei Bay or the lush mountains, which frame the property. Package prices range from $1,994.85 for five nights in an ocean-view unit during low season (January 5 to May 31, and September 9 to December 19), to $3,489.85 for seven nights in a premium oceanfront unit during high season (June 1 to September 8, and December 20, 2008, to January 4, 2009).
