VP Contender & P90X

The presidential election has just taken a new turn, with the announcement that Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan will be Mitt Romney’s running mate. What in the world does this have to do with fitness? Stick with me here.

You would think that our interest would be in what Paul Ryan stands for. What exactly are his political beliefs?

Yet what we have learned is that people aren’t looking into his values and political views. They are looking to see him shirtless. In fact, Google searches for him accompanied by the word “shirtless” have gone up.

You don’t know whether to laugh or cry. I mean, here we are considering who will be our next President and Vice President of the United States and what’s on the mind of some Americans? How a potential VP might look with his shirt off.

Who knows? Maybe having a vice president with a toned, lean body will be enough motivation for Americans to get off the couches and into the gym. Or you might want to try out the workout program responsible for his physique, considered to be one of the toughest.

Apparently that chiseled body is a result of P90X. This is a 12 piece DVD set designed by personal trainer, Tony Horton. But this isn’t for the faint of heart…this is serious exercise.

The goal of the program is to help you regain your balance, power and speed. It consists of yoga, karate, plyometrics and cross-training but also incorporates the use of weight machines. The movements are fast and really get your heart rate going.

The program is so serious that you can find in small print a warning about the risk of acute injury or heart attack. So if you are in your 40’s and have decided now to start exercising, when you haven’t done it in the past couple of decades, you might want to talk to your doctor. Actually, you should always talk with your doctor before starting a new fitness routine.

As for me, I think any decisions I make in the upcoming election won’t have anything to do with body shapes. What about you?
