Wacky Halloween Pumpkins

pumpkin

Pumpkins, pumpkins, who’s got pumpkins? Not me yet, but next weekend we will be traipsing off to the pumpkin farm to enjoy some lovely fall orangeness. We don’t decorate our pumpkins in early October, but we do collect them and mull over ideas of how to decorate them!

How can you get creative with your pumpkins this year?

If you have toddlers or preschoolers, get them into the action by making painted pumpkins. Carve them or leave them whole, then let the little ones loose on the pumpkins.

Create weird lighting effects by adding glow sticks to the inside of your pumpkins or by placing flashing bike lights into the pumpkin to create an eerie on again, off again glow.

Create a pumpkin scarecrow. Add a hat to a pumpkin carved in a shape of a head, and place a turtleneck on the bottom of the pumpkin. Stuff the turtleneck with straw or clothing, and add a pair of stuffed jeans to the bottom of the turtleneck. Cinch them tight with a belt.

Add eyes, ears, nose and mouth to your festive squashes to make a Potato Head style pumpkin. You can use toy eyes, eyes from the sewing store, or pumpkin kits specifically designed for this purpose.

Go for pumpkins in non-traditional colors. I love the white and black pumpkins that people are making these days. Alternate them in arrangements of three to five pumpkins, or place them one on top of the other.

Join the glitterati with a Halloween pumpkin covered in glitter. Paint your pumpkin and let it dry. Cover it in white glue that dries clear. Add abundant quantities of glitter. Do this outside, please! Please note: when you are quietly cursing the glitter that’s embedded in the tip of your nose, you didn’t hear about glitter pumpkins on this blog.

Add features to your pumpkin. Hit the craft store for some Halloween bling. Add bows, crows, and rats to your pumpkins, maybe a few spiders climbing up a web on the side.

What do you do to make fun and wacky Halloween pumpkins?
