Waiting for Harry Potter

I am seeing more and more countdowns to Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on blog sites, it newspapers, and even on the screen saver of one of our computers.

Here are some fun things to do while you are waiting:

Guess the last word of the last book. And no, it’s not scar. J.K. Rowling said she changed it in “the eleventh hour”. You can hold your own contest among your family and friends. Even if you don’t have prizes, it’s still fun to guess. Besides, true Harry fans will love debating the last word.

Go shopping for some Harry Potter Candy. We’ve seen the candies at toy stores and discount stores. Look for Chocolate Frogs, Bertie Botts beans, Jelly Slugs, Fizzing Whizzbees, and Cockroach Clusters. Yuck to the roaches. I’ll stick with Chocolate Frogs, especially since they really do come with trading cards. A jelly bean tasting game is fun too, although I stick with Jelly Bellies. I really don’t want to chance eating a vomit or dirt flavored jelly bean. Bleech. For the kids though, that’s part of the fun.

See if you and your kids can predict the ending. Go back and look for clues in the first six books and the five movies. Having a movie marathon would be long. But over the course of the last few months we have re-watched all the movies. Who is R.A.B.? Where and what are the Horcruxes? Is Snape really evil? Or he is following Dumbledore’s orders or is he working for both sides? Is Harry going to die? The word from Rowling interviews is that two main characters die in this book. Who do you think it is? Who is going to wind up with whom? Who is going to be Headmaster at Hogwarts? What role does Aunt Petunia play, what was her promise?

Just a few more days and we’ll all have our noses buried in the book. We are going to have work out a sharing system so we don’t fight. And an honor system for those who read ahead not to spoil the ending for the others. It’s fun to have the whole family waiting so anxiously for a book to get published.
