Whether you have been exercising regularly or are looking to start a new exercise regimen – running is always an option. I am not a huge fan of running because it kills my knees. On the other hand, running appeals to a lot of individuals who enjoy the sheer physical exertion of running and the adrenalin it generates. Running is a great activity for those that enjoy it and if you are interested in trying it out, here are a few guidelines to follow.
First and foremost, see your doctor. You should always get a full physical to make sure you are in good enough shape to begin running or whether you need to start off with walking for example. A cardiovascular stress test is a great way for a doctor to ascertain your cardiovascular fitness. Understand, while running is a healthy activity, it’s a high intensity activity that really stresses your heart and your lungs. If you are overweight or a smoker, the stress can actually be debilitating and work against any progress you may make.
Talk to the doctor about the fact that you want to start running. Ask him or her for any advice. Discuss with them your diet and nutrition as well as any other exercise that you participate in regularly. The doctor may ask you what the goals of the activity are for – are you running for marathon training or are you running for stress relief or are you running because you want to kick up the intensity of your exercise routine?
If you are working with a personal trainer or are setting up a beginning running plan on your own, take that plan to the doctor and consult with them about it. Ultimately, this consultation will help you to make the right decisions for your own personal benefit. The doctor can provide you with sound clinical advice based on your current physical shape and may even suggest alternatives to help you achieve your goals in the long run.
