Warm Up Empty Corners, Part IV

Here is another tip for filling in those empty spaces and corners: Add a stack of floor pillows. This idea will not only soften up hard corners, but it will bring more texture and color into a room.

In a casual space, a stack of overstuffed pillows in bright, assorted colors will pop against plain walls. In a more contemporary space, suede or leather pillows, or a combination of the two, will add some great texture or help spread existing textures throughout the room.

Floor pillows can double as extra seating in a casual space, and they are great to use when lying on the floor to watch TV, or play a board game or video game. You can find terrific floor pillows in many shops and stores, or online, or you can make your own.

Make Your Own Floor Pillows

To make a floor pillow, select a sturdy fabric such as upholstery fabric, denim, canvas, leather, micro suede, or even vinyl. Measure and cut 25″ squares from the material. Fold each edge over one inch and pin into place. Place two pieces of fabric together with the good side facing in. Sew right all the way across each of three edges, down the center of the one-inch fold. Don’t “turn” at the corner. Sew straight through and start a new seam for each edge, to insure nice, sharp corners.

On the fourth seam, sew from the corner to about four inches in. Do the same on the other side. Stuff the pillow, starting with the corners and making sure they are solid. Stuff the rest of the pillow until it is extra full and fluffy. Pin the bottom seam closed, and sew with thread that matches the fabric. Use this edge as the bottom of the pillow, and sew closed with small, tight stitches to keep the seam less noticeable.
