After a taste of summer, we’re back shivering in the 30s with April less than 48 hours away.
Such is life on the Frozen Tundra.
The fickle weather is one of the reasons why so many families from around here head south this time of year. Spring break officially kicks off for schools in our area in just a few days, but many of my daughter’s classmates have already jetted off on warm weather escapes to:
TEXAS
Forget about South Padre and the sea of drunken college coeds that hang out there. Instead, enjoy a more relaxing getaway at family-friendly Lake Hubbard. Located just outside of Dallas, Texas, the man-made lake is home to a litany of recreational adventures. The lake was created in 1970 during construction on a dam. It currently spans 22,000 acres and has a maximum depth of 40 feet. Lake Hubbard is a huge draw for fishing enthusiasts who enjoy catching white bass, striped bass, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and blue catfish.
FLORIDA
Don’t make like a lemming and follow the masses to Fort Lauderdale, Daytona Beach and Orlando; rather, quietly slip away to sun and fun in St. Petersburg, Florida. Located at the base of the Tampa Bay peninsula, St. Petersburg is surrounded by water on three sides. The picturesque vacation destination is home to fabulous beaches and a slew of family-friendly attractions, including a spectacular children’s museum. The Great Explorations Children’s Museum is all about hands-on learning. Kids of all ages will have a blast experimenting with the museum’s high-tech exhibits. Once the kiddos get their fill indoors, head outside to explore the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary. The unique avian hospital allows you to see first-hand how injured wildlife are tended to and released back into the wild. The sanctuary is staffed by professional volunteers who rehabilitate a variety of birds, from herons and raptors to egrets and pelicans.
