Water, Water, Everywhere

Are you one of those people who are willing to pay $1.00 or more for 20 ounces of water? While there are promises that this or that water is so much better than tap water or other bottled water, I say, give me a break. It’s water!

It is far less costly in the long run to purchase a simple filtering system or a filtering pitcher for your home than it is to continue paying as much for water as you do for other beverages. Of course, it’s up to you, but I prefer to spend my hard earned money on other things.

Now, it’s not just plain water that brings in the big bucks either. There’s also flavored water. It must not contain much of anything else since the nutrition label is identical to that of plain water. Yet, it costs as much or more than soda or juice.

There are lots of other “products” that are made mostly of water, such as cleaning products, but my favorite one has to be anti-freeze. I went to pick up some anti-freeze and noticed a bottle that said, “50/50” or some such on it. It cost more than regular anti-freeze, so I asked my husband what was so special about it. “It’s pre-mixed,” he answered with a smirk, watching for my reaction.

I was stunned. “You mean to tell me that this stuff is half water and it costs more than a bottle of 100% anti-freeze?”

I have to hand it to the people who are getting rich selling packaged water; they are truly innovative, just plain clever. What I don’t get is how easily consumers are persuaded into spending their hard earned money on water with a fancy name or package. Of course, if people don’t mind paying for the convenience of not having to mix their own solutions, that’s their business. I guess I’m just not one of those people. If you feel the same way, pay close attention to labels, and avoid those that list water as the first ingredient.
