It may not be a national holiday in this country, but March 17th is a day to celebrate nonetheless. St. Patrick’s Day is for the Irish, those who wish they were Irish, and those who are simply looking for a reason to drink… I mean… party… I mean… wear green.
For my family, which happens to be part Irish, March 17th is a day filled with parades, corned beef and cabbage and crafts. Even if you are not Irish you can get into the spirit by going green with these fun activities:
Green Shaving Cream: Add a few drops of green paint or green food coloring to ordinary shaving cream and have your kids make murals on large pieces of aluminum foil. If you have younger kids, then simply squirt some shaving cream on a table or other large, flat surface and let them go to town using the green goop as finger paint.
Shamrock Hats and Headbands: To make the hat, simply fold a large piece of newspaper into a boat shape and have your kids use green paint to add shamrocks. For the headband, cut out and decorate two shamrocks from green construction paper. Next, cut out two strips of paper, that when connected will fit around your child’s head. Connect the strips of paper with glue or tape. Attach the shamrocks to green pipe cleaners and place them onto the headband.
St. Patrick’s Day Necklace: Dye macaroni green. Have kids thread the green noodles onto a piece of yarn to make a necklace.
Shamrock Art: Buy a shamrock-shaped cookie cutter. Have kids dip the cookie cutter into a shallow container of green paint, then press onto a piece of paper to make shamrock prints. Embellish the shamrock prints with green glitter, glitter glue, sequins or stickers. Give finished piece to a family member or friend as a St. Patrick’s Day gift.
