Don’t blow your budget buying every seasonal scrapbooking embellishment you lay your eyes on. While the fantastically festive items are tempting to purchase, you can find slews of holiday-themed scrapbooking supplies for practically nothing if you simply take the time to surf the World Wide Web.
For example, several websites offer free Christmas fonts for use on holiday layouts. Check out Fonts and Things, The Holiday Spot, Font River, Font Space and 1001 Free Fonts, and then use them to design your own customized Christmas scrapbook paper. You can either repeat a saying or quote in the font of your choice across a solid colored background or pair the lettering with clip art to create a holly jolly background.
Another way you can really brighten up your page designs using free fonts is to highlight key words in titles or photo captions. Simply select a few words or phrases you want to call your reader’s attention to and replace them with decorative fonts. Or, you could make use of rebus-style journaling by using dingbats to replace words such as Christmas tree, Santa, angel, wreath, reindeer or snowflake.
One of my favorite ways to embellish titles is to flock certain letters. You could also cover select words with glitter to make them stand out. If you are working with free Christmas fonts, combine them with leftover letter stickers, chipboard or charms to create a cheap and easy mixed media title for your holiday-themed layout.
My young daughter loves working with Christmas dingbats. Fortunately, you can choose from a litany of free offerings, which you can then use as bullet points in a journaling block or enlarge the images and make them into tags for your layout. Kids can also select dingbat characters and add their own touches with colored pencils. Then, find a safe adhesive and use them as embellishments on your Christmas page design.
