Well, after most of the summer is behind us as far as the calendar is concerned, it has finally arrived in terms of the weather. Nice, tolerable, if sometimes rainy, days have given away to the heat of August. And while no one seems to have to do much watering of the gardens and law up to this point, that is quickly changing. Still, there are some great ways to reduce your watering without turning your lawn into a rock garden.
Of course, you can start by using native plants and ground cover. Native plants and grasses are used to the weather in your are, and so they will be taken care of by nature itself. Of course, this late in the game, you may not want or be able to out in new landscaping, so let us concentrate on how you can water less, no matter what grass and plants you already have.
Make sure to water in the morning. This will allow your lawn and garden to soak up more of the water. Watering later in the day means more evaporation and scorching of your law.
When you water, water deeply. Really soak the water in to your lawn. While this may seem as though you are using more water, in fact you will be using less. You can water infrequently if you water deep.
Use organic fertilizers. Not only are these fertilizers better for the environment, but many landscapers and gardening enthusiasts swear that they lead to hardier plants which then require less watering. Try it for yourself.
If you will be watering when you are away from home, make sure to use and automatic shut off or timer. Unexpected things can happen that may make you later home than you anticipated. Plus, you really don’t want your lawn being watered all day long.
