After reading fellow blogger Carol Paxman’s “Make It Easier and It Will Get Done,” I couldn’t help but chuckle. She shared that she wanted to work on a habit, making her bed. I don’t know if this will shock her and others but no one in my house has ever made their bed…I’m not kidding.
I hadn’t thought about it much until I read her blog. I had to ask myself, where did that bad habit of not making my bed come from?
I realized it began when my husband and I were first married. He oftentimes worked second shift, while I was on first shift. So most of the mornings I was off to work before he even got out of bed.
He never made it and since I wasn’t usually around to do it, it suddenly became our way. But then we started having kids and after a few years, he finally began to consistently work first shift.
However our habit had already been set. I guess I figured why bother changing it.
Actually, I don’t think I have ever given one thought to the fact that we don’t make our beds. It just seems to be a natural thing for us. In fact, even though I wash our bedding on a regular basis, I just toss it onto the bed.
Now we have an 18, 15 and 13-year-old and guess what? They have never made their beds. And I have never asked them to. It has become a family habit.
I have to wonder what will happen as my oldest son goes off into the world now. If he gets married, will his future wife be appalled to learn that he has never made his bed? Have I created a potential marital struggle?
I don’t know. It has never interfered in my marriage. So hopefully he meets a woman who doesn’t care that the bed is never made.
Is there a habit in your home that may surprise others?
