Wedding Planning: Great Gifts for the Groom

Did you know it’s tradition for the bride to give the groom a gift before the wedding? Groom gifts are a token of affection that the bride bestows on her groom. But your groom’s gift can be something simple and elegant, big and fun or high-tech and challenging. Here is a list of gift ideas that may stimulate your imagination. Remember, don’t worry about matching anyone else’s expectations – because what you give as your groom’s gift is between you and your husband to be.

So here are my ideas for a great groom’s gift:

  • Digital Camera – A digital camera is a great wedding gift for the groom, the bride or both. It is not in and of itself a sentimental gift, but it lets you capture memories both sentimental and profound while also providing a great treat for you both on the honeymoon – if you do go the digital camera route, be sure to get one with a memory stick and my advice would be to go for one that requires regular batteries rather than a rechargeable one because if you need new batteries, it’s easy to do on the fly with a new set of double AAs
  • Portable DVD player – My husband would laugh at this suggestion, because it’s a perfect gift for me (and he did get me one for an engagement present), but a portable DVD player is perfect for when you are traveling whether on a honeymoon or business. We’ve had a Toshiba for 7 years now and it charges really well and holds that charge for almost 90 to 120 minutes, so it’s great on flights
  • Smart Phones – My husband saw this the other day at work, one of his co-workers picked one up – it’s a cell phone that also has a camera, a PDA, a calendar, as well as Bluetooth and IM technology and he can even flip it open to use a keyboard – it’s a great geek toy – but it’s also a fabulous gift for the organized guy who wants to be able to do a little bit of everything
  • Sports or Dress Watch – My husband is very hard on watches, so one of the gifts he got was a titanium steel watch with shatterproof glass – it’s tough and resilient and you can get them with all kinds of features including heart rate monitor
  • iPod video – the latest iPod plays downloaded video from music to television to movies and it’s the latest edge of technology and it’s lightweight – great for taking to the gym, on trips or to listen to in the car or elsewhere

What gift did you give your groom?
