Wednesday Widgets: I Love Lamp

Want to bring the era of free love to your desktop? I Love Lamp says it will do just that.
In the Widget world, it seems that everyone is out to build a better lava lamp. There are several versions of these things to be had. I Love Lamp is one of the latest releases, or at least in its current version that promises a new icon and some bug fixes.

I have to admit that I don’t quite understand the current fascination with lava lamps on the desktop. Sure, they were really cool in college when every dorm floor boasted at least one or two. And, there was always someone looking around for one to take apart and dissect the mysterious power behind all of that floating goo.

I Love Lamp has done a nice job of emulating that goo. It floats and oozes, glops and drops and changes colors. The casing for the lava lamp has been upgraded to a shiny chrome in a “futuristic” design. Isn’t this ironic? The lava lamp is most often associated with the crunchy era of the 60s. I suppose the optional rocket shape is a nod to the space race of the 60s; a cute idea.

While there is nothing wrong with the program itself, if you like that sort of thing, I have to admit that I don’t like that sort of thing. In fact, I am very grateful for the dashboard feature that includes a delete button. With one press of that, my purple goo oozed its way over to my desktop trash can.

For me, a widget has to be useful, or at least very clever in its uselessness. I guess I just can’t justify staring at the lava lamp for even seconds, let alone minutes. It is pretty and might make a nice screen saver, but in widget form, it is just too tiny to make much of an impact that way.

Go and check it out if you want a little diversion, but save your permanent dashboard space for other applications.

Don’t forget to check back next Wednesday for another featured Widget!
