Weekend Getaways

When it comes to couple time between you and your spouse, sometimes a weekend is all the time the two of you can afford to take – but whether it’s all you can afford or not, you can’t not afford to take that time to yourselves. Yes, I know that was one of the worst sentences – but the sentiment is genuine. Life can be hard and we’re all pretty busy with our careers, our families, our homes, our community responsibilities and much, much more.

For some of us, pets are even a consideration before we can make plans to get away. Weekend getaways are easier to plan for because you just need to set aside two or three days at most for a pet sitter, a baby sitter or a house sitter (if Nana will come over and watch the kids both two-legged and four-legged in variety).

Weekend Faraway

Sometimes a weekend getaway doesn’t need to take you to a different town or even miles away. Some of the best locations can be found in your own neighborhood or within an hour’s drive. The idea of the weekend getaway is that the two of you get away together – it’s about whom you are with and not where you are going.

A weekend together means no kids interrupting every other word. A weekend together means no family dropping by unexpectedly or friends calling you over for a hand. A weekend together means no business calls, emails or interruptions. A weekend together is exactly that – time for the two of you.

Stay Up Late; Sleep In

Book a suite at a nice hotel locally – many offer discounts to local residents or even weekend specials when they have available rooms. A suite is nice because it gives you a bedroom and a living area. You can plan to take in a show or a movie or you can hole up together in the room.

If the hotel offers room service, you can request a candlelit dinner be served or you can festively dine out on a picnic on the floor. The time is yours – what makes it even better is you can have time for the silly conversations and not just the sober ones. You can make a rule that neither of you are allowed to talk about daily issues like forgotten errands nor household repairs that need to be done.

Instead, you talk about things like the movie or the show you went to see. How you are really feeling lately about the new fashions. A particular item that caught your eye or even some commercial that reminded you of when you were a kid.

Weekend getaways are ideal time to focus on the two of you. Time to reconnect with each other and enjoy what it’s like to curl up together in bed and laugh at the silliest of things. It’s a time to watch bad movies late into the night and to sleep late and eat breakfast in bed. Even if you can only get away like this for one or two weekends a year – you can’t afford to not take a weekend to yourselves.

What would you like to do with a weekend away?
