Weekend Wanderings – Disney Princess Wishes

Do you like ice shows? We do. I’m tickled that my daughter loves them and recently the Dallas area welcomed the Disney on Ice Presents shows to the American Airlines Center near downtown Dallas and we headed out to enjoy the show. The great thing about an ice show is the magic they can create and when ice shows travel they go from city to city for five to six days at a shot.

Preparing for an Ice Show

Despite the warmth of the local area, we took our jackets regardless. An ice show is always going to be cold on the inside – there’s a reason they call them ice shows. We were fortunate with our tickets because we were on the ground level in the F row, which put us just six rows back from the ice. The American Airlines Center features a lot of different seating options including second, third and fourth tier seating.

The other drawback to an ice show is the plethora of souvenirs and more that are lining the pathways around the center and being sold inside. $10 for cotton candy, $12 for snow cones and more – and all of it designed to entice and enchant the kids visiting the show. I know part of the allure is the marketing, but the idea of spending $22 for a doll that you could pick up at a Target for $9 is just outrageous.

Luckily for me, I have a savvy kid and when I pointed out the price, she refrained from asking for one of the prizes. She did choose a $7 Ariel that included her as a mermaid rather than a part of their world with two legs.

What About the Show

The show itself was quite spectacular. The Princess Wishes played something like a House of Mouse episode with Mickey and Minnie introducing the stories of different princes and princesses who’s wishes were brought to life – from Aladdin finding Genie in the lamp to Snow White singing to her prince and Prince Phillip rescuing Aurora from the clutches of Maleficent in a stunning sequence that featured ice dancers as different parts of the dragon.

The finale of the show included a romantic waltz around the ice with all the princes and princesses joined of course by those perennial Disney hosts: Mickey, Minnie and Goofy along with a mini fireworks display that really enchanted the kids. The show was a little over 2 hours long with a fifteen-minute intermission and worth every penny of the admission costs.

American Airlines Center

There is more that happens at the American Airlines Center than just ice shows. The venue is choice for basketball games, concerts and much more. Traffic flow into and out of the area is controlled by police officers in order to get visitors in and out smoothly and it definitely helps when you have hundreds of people arriving for an event and leaving an event at roughly the same time.

Have you been to any great ice shows lately?
